Hurricane boys top strong Spartan field

WAYNESVILLE — Brett Brooks was a double-event winner as Wilmington topped a strong field Friday at the Spartan Invitational at Waynesville High School.

Brooks won the shot put (47-7) and the discus (136-9).

Wilmington had 123 points while Lebanon was runnerup and Mason was third. Waynesville was next one point behind the Comets.

“It was a highly competitive meet but the depth of the boys team came out on top,” Hurricane head coach Chris Reynolds said. “Due to the tough competition, many of the boys had personal best times.

“I know officially last week we lost to Kings at Little Miami. They had a lot of issues with the scoring. Kings was a top 30 track program in the state last season. They only beat us by 18 points that night but 22 of their points came from the hammer throw and triple jump which are not traditional events and we had no one entered. The boys like to think they’re still undefeated.”

East Clinton did not score in the meet at Waynesville. Michael Horn was ninth in the 110-meter hurdles.

In the relays, Wilmington won the 4×800-meters and the 4×100-meters. The Hurricane finished as runnersup in the 4×400 and fourth in the 4×200.

In the field events, Brady Vilvens was second in the high jump and Brandon Glass was fifth. Adrien Cody and Carter Huffman both went 20-3 in the long jump with Cody finishing third and Huffman fourth.

Carter Huffman was runnerup in the 100-meter dash and the 200-meter dash. Glass finished fourth in the 200. TJ Killen placed sixth in the 400-meter dash.

Josh Andrews was a fourth-place finisher in the 800-meter run then Garrett Stoffer edged Andrews for eighth place in the 1,600-meter run.

In the 110-meter hurdles, Blaize Johnson was fourth while Levi Cochran finished eighth. The two scored in the 300-meter hurdles as well, with Johnson third and Cochran sixth.
