WC softball takes series from Ohio Northern

The Wilmington College softball team withstood a seventh-inning rally from Ohio Northern University (ONU) to take game one 5-4 of an Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) twinbill on Sunday.

The Polar Bears won game two 11-2.

In the first game, Hayley Suchland gave up one run and struck out five in 4.1 innings to earn the victory. Lindsey Carter followed Suchland to the mound. Alexis Stringfellow closed out the game for the save.

Megan Crager had two hits with a run scored. Suchland, who scored twice, doubled to drive in two runs. Arianna Layne also had an RBI. Alecia Kemp scored on Courtney Michalak’s RBI-single.

In the second game, McKenna Archey had an RBI for Wilmington. Layne and Olivia Doll had doubles for WC.

Wilmington (15-13, 14-10 OAC) will face John Carroll University in a four-game series this weekend.

On Saturday, Wilmington earned its first doubleheader sweep of ONU in more than a decade with 5-4 and 5-2 wins.

In the first game, Layne had three hits, including two homeruns, with two RBI and two runs scored. Suchland went the distance for the win in the circle, scattering nine hits over seven innings.

Sarah Bumps had an RBI-double to score Kemp. Lindsey Carter belted a two-run homer to straight-away centerfield.

In the second game, Michalak had a two-run double. Suchland and Carter also doubled home runs. Doll had two hits, a run scored and an RBI.

Stringfellow picked up her seventh pitching win of the season, allowing just four hits with a strikeout.
