WILMINGTON — Edging out New Richmond by two points, the Wilmington High School tennis team won its second straight SBAAC American Division tennis championship Wednesday on the WHS courts.
The Hurricane had 40 points while the Lions came in with 38. Clinton-Massie was fourth in the tournament with 26 points.
“Winning a league championship is never easy and this year was no exception,” WHS head coach Steve Reed said. “The boys showed true Wilmington grit and it was never so evident as it was down the stretch with Caleb (Reed) and Avery (Bradshaw).”
Bradshaw was the first singles champion, outlasting a determined Alex Jones of Clinton-Massie in the title match, 6-3, 7-6 (7-5).
“Alex played a great match,” CM coach Rod Amburgy said. “He lost a close match but played the best match he has played this season. I’m very proud of him.”
Reed won his second singles championship 6-3, 5-6 retired.
“Both (Avery and Caleb) have given so much to our program and it was awesome to see them go out as individual champs and repeat team champs,” said coach Reed.
Wilmington won a third individual championship as Isaac Martini blitzed the field at third singles.
“Isaac just keeps getting better and made quick work of his matches,” Reed said. “I couldn’t be prouder of our doubles teams. They competed hard and even though I know they didn’t get the finish they wanted, they should be proud as well.”
Amburgy was pleased with his squad as all courts were able to win at least one match in the tournament.
