TIFFIN, Ohio – After one day of competition in the Ohio Athletic Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championship meet, the Wilmington College men are in fifth place.

The WC women sit in ninth place. The meet is hosted by Heidelberg University. The day started bright and sunny but slowly turned to cold and rain, however that did not stop the Quaker squads from competing hard.

For the WC women, senior Emma Burke qualified for the finals of two hurdle events, running 65.2 in the 400s and 15.68 in the 100s.

Also on the track was Savannah Rhodes, a Blanchester graduate, who posted a personal best 40:59.81 in the 10,000-meter run. Wilmington also had the 4×800-meter relay squad finish eighth.

In field events, both Kayli Sullivan and Megan Roell competed in the prelims of the discus with Sullivan’s heave of 32.06 meters placing her 14th and Roell’s toss of 31.41 meters placing her 17th. Lily Williford also took 17th in the pole vault with a mark of 2.78 meters.

In the freezing rain, the junior duo of Evan Whitaker (fifth in 9:39.19) and George Rickett (sixth in 9:40.65) scored in the 3,000-meter steeplechase.

Directly after, freshman Dane Klosterman ran a hot time in the 400-meter hurdles to qualify for finals. Running events were capped off by a sixth-place finish by the 4×800-meter squad of Eric Reynolds, Rickett, Simon Heys and Aidan Henson.

Field events were limited on the day for the Quakers, as the bulk of the workload comes on day two. The throws squad managed to make the most of it, though. Blake Jamison was third and Nate Marcum sixth in discus. Freshman Sam Eastes qualified for finals in the javelin, but came one spot shy of scoring.

“I liked the position the team put itself in today,” WC head coach Ron Combs said. “We did not have a perfect day, however we made the most of the wet conditions and I am excited to see what happens on day two.”

Day two of the meet is set for today.
