Close calls for Blan’s Whitaker, Schutte at districts

PIQUA — Neither Blanchester or East Clinton had regional qualifiers during competition from Saturday’s Division II Piqua Track and Field Championship meet.

But there was several close calls.

Blanchester’s Savanna Schutte was fifth on misses in the girls pole vault. She cleared 8-6 as did Kate Handle of Waynesville but Handle advanced to the regional based on misses.

Ainsley Whitaker had another close call, placing fifth in the discus with a throw of 93-1. She was 21 inches away from the final regional qualifying place.

For the East Clinton boys, Justin Arnold ran 5:20.62 and Zach Vest 5:36.67 in the 1,600-meter run. Jayson Edison had a best toss of 28-4.5 and Spencer Wiget had a best of 27-8.25 in the shot put.

For the Blanchester girls, Kellen Staehling was eighth in the shot put (39-11.5) and brother Gabriel Staehling finished ninth (38-9). Becca Kratzer was sixth in the 100-meter hurdles in 17.49 seconds. Brett Bandow clocked a 5:26.55 in the 1,600-meter run. Emma Damewood ran 2:56.31 in the 800-meter run. Schutte was ninth in the long jump (14-0.5).
