WILMINGTON — With a strong defensive effort, the Wilmington High School boys soccer team battled West Carrollton to a 1-1 tie Saturday in non-league soccer action at Alumni Field.

“West Carrollton was very strong, big and physical in the middle of the field and we had our hands full from the start,” WHS coach Imad El-Macharrafie said.

The Pirates led 1-0 with a goal in the 17th minute then Caleb Macias tied the match with a goal in the 29th minute. Nathan Wood recorded an assist on the equalizer.

“Caleb was everywhere in the middle of the field,” El-Macharrafie said. “We had a couple of late chances to win the game but couldn’t find the net.”

First-year goalkeeper Cole Bernhardt had eight saves in goal for the Hurricane.

“Our defensive unit led by Avery Warix and an outstanding debut by Bernhardt held strong especially in the second half.

“Overall a good performance and one that we will improve off of moving forward.”

WHS will play at Clinton-Massie Tuesday night.
