Friday Night Futbol, presented by the Columbus Crew professional soccer franchise, will feature varsity soccer matches between Wilmington and McClain at Alumni Field on Aug. 21.
The Hurricane boys will face the Tigers at 6 p.m. with the Lady Hurricane taking the newly-turfed pitch at 8 p.m. against the Lady Tigers.
As a host school, Wilmington will receive a pair of tickets to the Columbus Crew match on Sept. 26 against the Portland Timbers to raffle during the Fright Night Futbol festivities.
This opening night initiative is part of the Ohio High School Athletic Association’s state-wide campaign “to provide an opportunity for high school soccer teams to get the publicity, recognition and attention that high school football teams normally receive on Friday nights,” according to a press release from the OHSAA.
The matches will be the first official matches of the season for both schools, a day earlier than normal, but approved by the OHSAA.
