CHILLICOTHE — For the second year in a row, the Wilmington High School boys cross country team won the South Central Ohio League championship.

Running at the Rivers Edge Golf Club in Chillicothe, the Hurricane edged out Miami Trace for the crown, 49-52. Led by race runnerup Jacob Whitaker (16:12 time), Clinton-Massie was fifth and East Clinton seventh in the boys race. Aiden Henson was EC’s first runner at 28th.

On the girls side, Wilmington was third and East Clinton fifth. Clinton-Massie did not have a full team but Katie Hughes finished fourth in record time. She broke the Massie girls record by running a 19:31.47. The old record was set in 2010 by Aubrey Richardson. The old time was 19:40.

AJ Houseman of CM was sixth while Hailey Fugate of WHS was 10th in the girls race. Rebecca Bevan was East Clinton’s first finisher in 21st place.

“I am very proud of how we ran at this meet,” CM coach Dean Richardson said. “All of our kids really stepped up and ran great races. Katie and Jacob had good strategies for running fast times in their races. They knew who they had to run with in order to get a good time and both were able to execute their race plans.”

For the Wilmington boys, Simon Heys was third in 16:41, a time that matches his own school record. Tyler Parks fifth in 16:44 and Bayden Stephens eighth in 16:54.

Miami Trace had the race winner in Blake Pittser and averaged more than three seconds faster per runner than Wilmington, but the Hurricane depth proved to be too much. WHS had five of the top 20 runners in the race.
