Wilmington College men’s soccer sophomore Niklas Martensson was named the Ohio Athletic Conference Player of the Week for the week ending Oct. 30.

“Niklas is a great player and has had an outstanding season, but this past week was something very special,” said Wilmington head coach Bud Lewis. “His play from box to box is as good as any midfielder in the conference. He is the engine on the field for us and he has been responsible for most success playing through the midfield and attack throughout the season, especially his last three games. He is most deserving of this recognition.”

Martensson (Torna Hallestad, Sweden/NTI) had a hand in all three of Wilmington’s goals in a 4-3 loss to Muskingum. He finished with two goals and an assist. Martensson tallied the first goal, the game-winner, in Wilmington’s 4-1 victory over Heidelberg.

The sophomore midfielder finished the season with team-highs in goals (eight) and assists (four). His goals are sixth in the OAC, while his 20 points are eighth in the league.

Wilmington finished the 2016 campaign 5-11-2 overall and 2-7 in the OAC.
