BAINBRIDGE — Overpowering Adena in the second quarter, East Clinton opened the girls basketball season with a 53-21 win over Adena here Friday night in the Paint Valley tournament.

East Clinton (1-0 on the year) outscored Adena 20-3 in the second period.

“We came out pretty hot in the second quarter and put the game out of reach,” EC head coach Steven Gerber said. “We struggled shooting the ball in that first quarter, missed some easy shots. I think just some first-game jitters was a little bit of it.”

Paige Lilly and Mackenzie Campbell led the offensive charge for the Lady Astros in the second quarter. After leading just 9-6 in the first quarter, Lilly scored 11 and Campbell added six in the second quarter as EC bolted out to a 29-9 halftime advantage.

“Defensively we played pretty well,” Gerber said. “We got after them pretty hard early. Our half-court man (defense) was really strong. The kids did a great job of controlling the gaps and shutting things down.

“There were no easy shots (for Adena). We were very aggressive in the passing lanes and we created some easy opportunities in our half-court defense, swarming to the ball doing a lot of the things we’ve been working on.”

Sierra Christian added seven points in the third quarter as the Lady Astros built the difference to 47-18 at the end of three quarters. Rhylee Luttrell had six points in the fourth quarter.

Lilly led East Clinton with 13 points. Campbell added seven and four players scored six to round out a balanced attack.

“We got a lot of good shots, not a bad shot taken,” said Gerber. “The kids did a good job of not forcing anything, getting the looks we were looking for.”

East Clinton will host Leesburg Fairfield Wednesday night. The reserve tipoff is set for 6 p.m. with the varsity game to follow.
