WAYNESVILLE — The Clinton-Massie girls basketball team opened the 2016-17 season Friday night with a 64-21 victory over Dayton Stivers in the first varsity game of the Waynesville Lady Spartans’ Tip-off Classic.
For new Lady Falcons head coach Tim McGraw it was his team’s defensive effort that stood out.
“Our defensive effort tonight, especially in the first half was simply outstanding,” he said.
Clinton-Massie reeled off the first nine points of the contest, forcing Stivers to call time out with 4:42 remaining in the first quarter. Massie outscored the Lady Tigers the rest of the period by an 11-7 margin to take a 20-7 first quarter lead.
The second quarter was all Falcons, as Massie held Stivers scoreless the entire period, while putting 23 unanswered points on the board. Totally dominating the Lady Tigers, it was Massie in front with a commanding 43-7 advantage at the intermission.
Madilyn Newton led the Massie offensive effort in the first half with 10 points, while Faith Cottrell and Savannah Myers added eight points each.
Cottrell was deadly beyond the arc with a pair of three-pointers in the opening half. Myers accounted for three stickbacks during the first quarter.
The third quarter was more competitive, but Massie still had the upperhand with an 11-8 margin. Stivers continued to struggle offensively, going scoreless for more than five minutes of the third period.
Courtney Taylor’s basket in the lane at the 2:52 mark snapped the scoreless streak, as Massie pulled away with a 47-9 lead. After three quarters were in the book, it was a 54-15 margin for the Lady Falcons.
McGraw utilized the roster, liberally giving several players ample time on the floor.
“I thought the girls ran the floor very well. We can go at least eight or nine deep and it was great to give everyone plenty of playing time,” said McGraw. “We had good balanced scoring.”
Ten different players made in the scorebook, with three players reaching double figures. Cottrell led the way with 13, Myers added 12, followed by Newton’s 10 points.
Taylor was the high scorer for Stivers with eight points.
The Lady Falcons will play in the championship contest of the Tip-Off Classic Saturday night at 7:30 p.m. against Waynesville or Legacy Christian.
In the reserve game Friday night, Clinton-Massie defeated Stivers 52-13. The young Lady Falcons will play in the JV championship game at Waynesville at 4:30 p.m. Saturday.
Patience Chowning and Nina Lazic had 13 points each to lead Clinton-Massie to the win.
Hannah Doss, Alana Smith and Gabby Woods scored six points each while Savannah Henderson added five and Maggie Williams had three.
Henderson had a team-best four assists; Chowning led with eight steals while grabbing five rebounds and handing out three assists; Smith grabbed six rebounds and came up with two steals; Doss had three steals; Williams had three assists, seven rebounds and two steals; Ashlie Miller had five rebounds and two steals; Lazic hauled in eight rebounds and came up with two steals; and Woods pulled down a team-high 11 rebounds.
