DEFIANCE – It’s not often a team will shoot 53 percent from the field and lose a basketball game.

But the Wilmington College Fightin’ Quakers are thankful it happened Wednesday night as Defiance was red-hot from the field but Wilmington prevailed 88-80 in a non-conference game at the Weaner Center on the DC campus.

The win puts the Quakers at 3-2 on the year after an 0-2 start to the season.

Wilmington was almost as hot from the floor, hitting 31 of 59. Defiance was 31 of 58.

The difference came at the free throw line where the Quakers were 17 for 21, including an 8 for 8 effort by Christian Jones. Jones finished with 20 points and six assists for Wilmington.

The Yellow Jackets were 11 for 21 at the line.

Wilmington trailed by no more than one point at any time.

The game was tied 59-59 with 10:57 to play in regulation when the Quakers went on a deciding run. Noah Chatman, with an assist to Jones, gave WC a lead it would not relinquish 61-59.

Nathan Scott hit a two then a three, thanks to a Payton Smith offensive rebound, to make it 66-59 WC.

The Quakers led by as many as 12, that coming with 3:13 to play in the second half when DJ Iles drained a three-pointer.

Coming into the game ranked nationally in assists with 20 per game, WC dished out 26 against DC on 31 field goals in the win. Iles led the team with seven assists.
