Despite 30 from Jackson, Lady ’Cane loses heartbreaker 64-62

DAYTON — Chaminade Julienne led for a little more than a minute against Wilmington Monday, but it was enough to win 64-62.

The Eagles scored first 36 seconds into the game and held that lead for 48 seconds. It was mostly Wilmington after that until an Annie Weckesser bucket gave the hosts a 63-62 advantage with 17.9 seconds left.

Wilmington fouled Weckesser and she missed the free throw, which the Hurricane rebounded and then immediately committed a traveling violation. Staci Greene hit the back end of a double-bonus for the last of her team-high 20 points to put CJ up 64-62.

The Hurricane (2-1) drove the length of the court in an attempt to tie the game but missed the mark.

CJ (3-2) scored the last six points of the game in the final 21.9 seconds. Weckesser buried a three to start the spurt.

“This is going to be the true test of the character of our team and how we deal with adversity,” WHS coach Zach Williams said. “We gave up middle drives. We got killed on the backboards. We weren’t strong with the ball. We had some lazy passes. It came back to hurt us.”

Wilmington led by as much as 23-8 just under two minutes into the second quarter, with Mya Jackson already accounting for 12 points by then.

Jackson led all scorers with 30 points in the non-league loss.

The Eagles roared back with a 17-3 run, including three Greene bombs and a steal she took the distance, to get within 26-25 just before the intermission.

“33 (Greene) and 22 (Weckesser) were dead-eye shooters and we needed to contest them. We gave them open looks and they hit them,” Williams said.

Jackson single-handedly went on an 8-1 run to start the second half to give the Hurricane a 38-28 cushion. She hit consecutive buckets early in the final period to put the Hurricane up 54-43.

The Eagles didn’t get any closer than seven until their game-ending run.
