LEES CREEK — Teamwork and ball movement were a couple of the things that led to the Washington Court House 55-51 win over East Clinton in the varsity girls basketball game Wednesday night at the ECHS gym.

ECHS head coach Steven Gerber said, “I thought we played well. We came off a tough loss to Hillsboro on Saturday and I thought the kids had two really good days at practice [and] stepped up.”

Paige Lilly was the leading scorer for East Clinton with 15 points, 7 of those came from the free throw line, while Kaitlin Durbin had 9 points. Mackenzie Campbell and Lacey Peterman contributed 7 points each.

Hannah Haithcock from Washington Senior was the leading scorer on the night with 20 points. Tabby Woods, who was a perfect 4 for 4 from the free throw line, added 12 points.

Washington started the game off with a 10-2 run. It wasn’t until midway through the second quarter that East Clinton was able to take the lead with about 5:30 left to go in the half.

Lacey Peterman showed great offensive effort in the quarter, scoring 7 points and putting the Astros ahead 31-25 by the end of the half.

Both teams came out in the second half full of energy. East Clinton started off the third quarter with a quick 3-pointer that increased the lead to 7 points but it wasn’t long until Haithcock, who finished with 9 points in the quarter, answered.

By the end of the 3rd quarter, East Clinton’s lead was just 3 at 44-41.

With about 7 minutes left to go in the fourth, Washington took the lead at 45-44 and the game was close up until the buzzer.

With 6.5 seconds left in the game Paige Lilly made 2 free throws making it 52-51. With less than 5 seconds left, East Clinton was forced to foul and with 3 made free throws and a nifty defensive effort by Haithcock, the Lions were able to close out the win.
