Lady Hurricane defense stifles Lady Falcons 39-18

ADAMS TOWNSHIP — Wilmington held cross-county and South Central Ohio League rival Clinton-Massie without a field goal in the second and fourth quarters in a 39-18 victory Wednesday.

“Our girls did a good job tonight with the details of the game plan,” WHS head coach Zach Williams. “Offensively, we went a little cold in the second half, but our defense was able to keep the lead.”

The Hurricane (5-2, 3-1) led 23-7 late in the first half after a 12-1 run. Massie (4-4, 1-3) scored the last four points of the half at the free throw line to take a 23-11 deficit into the intermission.

The Falcons held Wilmington to just a field goal in the third quarter to cut the Hurricane cushion to single-digits.

“We struggle against teams that pressure us and are more physical than we are,” CM head coach Tim McGraw said. “We cut it to nine at the end of the third and then they scored the first seven in about a minute. I thought we got lazy. It seems like they got all the 50-50 balls. It seems like every time we gave up an offensive rebound, they scored off of it.”

A seven-point flurry in 23 seconds at the start of the final quarter put the game out of reach for Massie. Leah Frisco started the spurt with a stick back. Mya Jackson, who led all scorers with 14 points, followed that 15 seconds later with a hoop and the harm. She missed the free throw, but she chased down the rebound that ended up in the hands of Faith Sanderson for a three.

“I think our conditioning came through and wore them down,” Williams said.

Savannah Myers led Massie with eight points.
