LEES CREEK — After a fast start to its South Central Ohio League game with Chillicothe, the East Clinton varsity boys basketball team fell short 58-43 Friday night at the ECHS gym.

The loss brings the Astros record to 2-7.

“We knew they were very athletic,” said East Clinton head coach Tony Berlin. “We knew were going to have trouble with them.”

JT McCarren led the Astros with 21 points.

“That’s what we are looking for in kids who give us 32 minutes of playing hard,” Berlin said.

Wyatt Floyd added 13 points while Cameron Connor had 6.

Johnson and Roderick led the Cavaliers with 12 points each. Brandon Maughmer had 9 points..

East Clinton jumped out to an 8-0 lead at the start of the game and by the end of the first quarter that had taken a 10-2 lead.

“We followed our game plan very well in the first quarter and you could tell,” Berlin explained. “At the end of the first quarter we held them to 2 points and we were right where we needed to be.”

In the second period, the Cavaliers managed to battle back and take a 4-point lead going into the second half.

“Against a Division I team that is athletic, I was happy at halftime, even though we didn’t play well at times in the second quarter,” Berlin said. “But we can’t have the break downs we had in the third and fourth quarters, especially with turnovers, and expect to win.”

After an exceptional first half, the Astros struggled in the secondsd, and were outscored by 11 points. In total, the Cavaliers forced 26 turnovers which led to many points.

The Astros fought hard in the fourth quarter, scoring 14 points, but after being down by nearly double digits at the end of the third quarter, the Astros never truly challenged the Cavaliers lead.

The Astros now look forward to their next game which will take place Tuesday night at Miami Trace who is currently leading the SCOL.
