Lady Astros soar to 50-23 win over Lady Indians

LEES CREEK — Excellent defense was one of the many factors that led to the East Clinton Lady Astros’ 50-23 win over the Hillsboro Indians Wednesday night at the EC gym in South Central Ohio League play.

“Very very proud of our kids, they stepped up big tonight,” EC coach Steven Gerber said after the game. “Hillsboro beat us down there the first time and our kids got after it tonight on both ends and they were aggressive all over the floor.”

Paige Lilly led the Astros with 15 points while Lacey Peterman had 13 points.

Sierra Christian had 8 points and Kayla Hall had 7 points. Bre Davis did the dirty work for the Astros with multiple rebounds.

“I can’t really single out one,” explained Gerber, “I think everyone played excellent.”

Sullivan led the Indians with 10 points Burns had 4 points and Marsh had 3.

The Astros were unstoppable in the first quarter. After their fourth point, Hillsboro didn’t score for the rest of the quarter and hardly managed to hit the rim while the Astros took advantage of open shots and fast-break opportunities.

With a three pointer in the final seconds of the period, East Clinton had already left Hillsboro in an 18-point deficit by the end of the first quarter, 22-4. Peterman and Lilly both had 9 in the opener.

East Clinton maintained a steady lead in the second quarter, outscoring the Indians 7-5. By the end of the first half, Hillsboro was facing a 29-9 deficit.

During the third quarter Hillsboro scored more points than it did in the first two quarters combined but only managed to score 3 in the fourth. In total, the second half wasn’t much different than the first and the Astros flew away with a 27-point win.

The win gives the Astros their fifth win of the season and their second within a week as their record moves to 5-9.

“The kids have bought in and taken it to heart,” Gerber said. “They are tired of being beat all of the time and they have really stepped up to work. They have worked hard all year but they have really stepped over the last couple weeks here.”

The Lady Astros will play at Washington Jan. 14.
