Wilmington HS senior Morgan makes Urbana college choice

Wilmington High School senior Savannah Morgan has given a verbal commitment to play soccer this coming fall at Urbana University.

Morgan, Wilmington’s all-time leading scorer with 27 goals and 61 points this past season, said Urbana offers her the right major and the ability to continue to play soccer.

“I have the chance to continue doing what I love,” Morgan said. “They have my intended major, it’s a small beautiful campus and it’s not too far from home.”

Morgan was the fourth leading scorer in the Southwest District this season, recording 27 goals and 7 assists, good for 61 points. The 27 goals and 61 points are single season records at WHS. Both marks broke Morgan’s previous bests of 24 goals and 60 points.

Morgan finishes her WHS career as the leading scorer with 84 goals, 32 assists and 200 points. Lauren Lewis is second with 59 goals, 26 assists and 144 points. Morgan’s 32 assists are second all-time behind Bryah Arehart and Drezden Beam who finished with 33 assists each.

The WHS striker said she expects to maintain that scoring role for the Blue Knights. “They need a scorer and that’s a challenge I will be taking upon myself,” Morgan said.

Morgan also considered Alabama State, Murray State and Southern Nova University. She also looked at Wright State University to join its nursing program. In the end, though, Urbana was the pick.

“Urbana made the recruiting process very easy for me,” she said. “It’s been fun to travel to many states for showcases, but I am glad all the emailing, phone calls, and letters are over now. Recruiting isn’t the simplest thing but it’s very much worth it. Hard work pays off.”
