Wilmington resident Karen Lewis captained the Greater Marco (Fla.) Family YMCA women’s over-50 tennis team to a second straight state championship.

The Marco Y team won the 6.5 state title recently in Daytona Beach. The team is a combined 28-3 over the last two seasons.

Aside from Lewis, team members are Deb Caudil, Peggy Chandler, Leanne Kerins, Jean Martin, Lisa Meurgue, Elizabeth Midkiff, Nancy Shroka, Marlea Bowser, Alice Earl, Mary Fischer, Jackie Heise and Stephanie Opel.

Lewis said she was told her team was the nicest during the entire tournament. “That represents the Marco YMCA way,” Lewis said according to information from the YMCA. “We knew we were going to play our best but that, win or lose, the sun would still come up tomorrow.”

The Marco Y team qualified for the state tournament following league and district championships. All tournaments are under the rules and regulations of the United States Tennis Association.
