GOSHEN – Blanchester erupted for 14 points in the final quarter Saturday and defeated Batavia 35-27 in the Southern Buckeye Athletic & Academic Conference Shootout at Goshen High School.
Blanchester is 12-10 on the year and will face No. 2 seed Bellbrook 7:45 p.m. Wednesday at Lebanon High School in Div. II sectional tournament action.
“This assures us of a winning season,” BHS coach Bennie Carroll said. “The girls have hung in there and played really hard all year.”
Batavia drops to 8-14.
Neither team had much offense through three quarters. Blanchester led 7-6 after one period but Batavia tied the game at 12-12 at halftime.
“Both teams struggled offensively in the first half,” Carroll said.
But in the third quarter, the Ladycats pulled out to five points lead and maintained the advantage to the end.
“We got up five and it kind of stayed around there the rest of the time,” Carroll said.
In the fourth quarter, Asia Baldwin and Elecia Patton combined to make 7 of 11 free throws. Patton had a key steal and layin late in the game, Carroll said, to push the BHS lead back to six points.
“They (Asia and Elecia) kind of carried us (offensively) in the fourth quarter and we just kept gritting it out defensively,” said Carroll.
Patton finished with 11 points. Maggie Mehlmann of Batavia led all scorers with 13 points.
Carroll said the Ladycats were a bit shorthanded in this one. Merri Lindsey did not play and Josie Farrow and Dakota Watters were both hampered with medical issues.
