SPRINGBORO — The would-be game-tying run was thrown out at home plate Tuesday as Clinton-Massie held off Springboro 8-7 in a non-league softball game at SHS.

The win moves Clinton-Massie to 4-0 on the year. Springboro drops to 6-2 and sees a five-game winning streak come to an end.

“This was a game we needed tonight,” CM coach Anthony Lauer said. “Springboro is a good team. Great team win.”

The only down note came with an injury to left fielder Ashlie Miller.

“We had our left fielder go down with an injury in the third inning,” Lauer said. “We kinda dropped our intensity level at that point.”

Up 8-2 at the time, Massie had to hold off the Panthers down the stretch. The key play in the game came in the seventh. The Lady Falcons lead was 8-7. With two outs, a single to center had Springboro’s potential 8th run of the game heading home. Center fielder Victoria Sivert threw to Kelsey Carter who tossed a strike home to catcher Hailey Clayborn who blocked the plate and held on to the throw for the final out of the game.

“Hailey Clayborn did a nice job behind the plate tonight.” said Lauer. “She has been all season.”

Taylor Florea was not particularly sharp on the mound — she walked five and gave up five earned runs — but led the Massie offense with three hits.
