WILMINGTON — Despite seven errors in the field, the Wilmington High School softball team rallied for an 8-7 win in nine innings Thursday over Little Miami in non-league action at the WHS diamond.

The Lady Hurricane trailed 4-0 before they touched the bats. Of the seven Lady Panthers’ runs in the game, only three were earned.

Wilmington grabbed a 5-4 lead in the third on back-to-back sacrifices by Courtney Smart and Kendra McKenna. Lyla Self, three hits on the day, and Olivia Veidt, three runs batted in, drove in runs in the fourth as WHS again rallied to take a 7-6 advantage.

After Little Miami tied the game at 7-7 with an unearned run in the sixth, Wilmington won it in the ninth when Self scored all the way from first base on Smart’s fielder’s choice.

“She (Self) just barely got under the tag to score,” WHS coach Glen Blessing said of the final play of the game.

Wilmington is now 4-6 on the year while Little Miami drops to 7-6.

“The girls fought to stay in the game mentally and emotionally and that ultimately gave them a chance to still win the game,” Blessing said. “They never gave up, not one of them, bench player or starter. Proud of them all for battling to the end.”
