Briggs earns MSU male scholar award

MOREHEAD, Ky. — Wilmington High School graduate Colt Briggs earned the Morehead State University Male Scholar of the Year.

Briggs and Morehead senior punter Pat DiSalvio shared the honor. Both players had 3.77 grade point averages in biomedical sciences.

The Morehead State Athletics Honors Banquet, hosted by the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, was held May 1 and recognized academic, athletic, and civic achievements of students in the department.

“I’m proud of all of our student-athletes for another outstanding school year and athletic season,” senior woman administrator Victoria Johnson was quoted on the MSU athletic website. “It’s vital that we honor accomplishments of our student-athletes both on and off the playing surface.”

Briggs won the News Journal Clinton County Scholar-Athlete of the Year in 2012.

On the football field, Briggs is ending his red-shirt junior season. He has one year of eligibility and is listed on the Eagles spring football roster.

This past football season, Briggs was named second team in the Pioneer Football League post-season honors. He also was second team PFL All-Academic team. A CoSIDA Academic All-American, Briggs had 80 tackles this past season for Morehead State and led the team with five quarterback sacks. He also had a team-best 17.5 tackles for loss.

As a member of the Hurricane football team, Briggs earned first team All-Fort Ancient Valley Conference honors and Associated Press All-Southwest District Ohio accolades his final three seasons.
