Playing in the title match on her birthday, Marie Matrka won her record eighth Thomas E. Price Cincinnati Metropolitan Tennis Tournament championship.

A 2001 Wilmington High School graduate, Matrka defeated Sarah Monteagudo 6-4, 6-3 on July 21 at the Lunken Playfield tennis facility.

In addition to playing tennis at WHS, Matrka was the Big South Conference women’s tennis player of the year at Coastal Carolina and an ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American. She earned BSC first team honors three times.

In the previous 11 years, Matrka has won eight singles titles, a Met record. Matrka and Kathy Graeter shared the record with seven titles until last month.

Matrka, who was inducted into the Clinton County Sports Hall of Fame in 2014, also has won seven doubles championships in the Met event.

Last week, Matrka won the women’s doubles and mixed doubles titles.
