The Wilmington College men’s soccer team allowed a goal in the 83rd minute and fell to Earlham Wednesday in non-conference action, 2-1, at Matlack Field.

“Because of mistakes we committed we didn’t get the tie, we lost,” said Wilmington head coach Bud Lewis. “We knew it was going to be a lengthy process for this team and we are trying to get better every day. It was a game of two evenly-matched teams and they made more plays than we did.”

After a scoreless first half, a defensive miscommunication enabled Earlham to take the lead in the 47th minute.

“We are continuing to make mistakes that are costing us,” said Lewis. “When we make mistakes, we are not making the great recovery plays to prevent the goal.”

Sophomore Grady Garrison (Cincinnati, OH/McNicholas) recorded the equalizer with his first goal of the season, scoring in the 59th minute.

Wilmington finished with 12 shots, six in each half, with six of its shots on frame. In contrast, Earlham only found space for five shots – four on goal – two of which found the back of the net.

Lewis said Earlham’s defense was “as good as anyone we’ve faced.” Their physical nature led to 20 fouls and two yellow cards being called on Earlham, while Wilmington was called for just seven fouls.

Freshman Nick Latessa (Englewood, OH/Northmont) allowed two goals with two saves in 90 minutes of action.

Wilmington (3-6) hosts Case Western Reserve 7 p.m. Saturday in non-conference action.
