EDITOR’S NOTE: Bud Lewis and his Wilmington College men’s soccer team have embarked on an 8-day soccer tour to Spain. Each day Lewis will submit a diary covering the team’s adventure, both on and off the pitch.

DAY 1: The Fightin’ Quakers left on Saturday for Spain. The team will travel and tour Madrid, Barcelona and smaller historic cities of Segovia and Toledo. Also the team will visit to St. Paul de Mar, a small town north of Barcelona on the Mediterranean Sea.

Lewis, who begins his 43rd year with the Quaker men’s team, has arranged an international soccer tour every three to four years and combines the soccer experience with an academic class in Art. Longtime art faculty member Hal Shunk travels with the team and conducts the academic class, organizing several visits to national museums and historical architecture and art work in the great cathedrals in Toledo, Segovia and Barcelona.

The team will play three matches against some very strong and experienced teams and will have team trainings on the off days. A real highlight of the tour for the team will be attending the Spanish Cup with FC Barcelona and Real Madrid, two of the world’s most famous soccer organizations.

“Seeing a match like that is a real ‘Bucket List’ opportunity for all of the players and coaching staff,” said Lewis.

The tour is arranged by a company, Adidas International, which is managed by one of Lewis’ former players, Nacho Sánchez.
