It’s back: WC, Earlham bring back Quaker Bowl competition

The Quaker Bowl is back.

The athletic departments of Wilmington College and Earlham College are bringing back the annual Quaker Bowl series beginning this season.

“This opportunity provides a friendly competition, but with something more at stake,” Earlham College Director of Athletics Mike Bergum said. “With department wide involvement, the Quaker Bowl makes for a wonderful rivalry between the two old rivals. The number of programs involved with the outcome will provide for increased team spirit and camaraderie within our department and on campus.”

Originally, the Quaker Bowl was awarded to the winner of the most recent football or men’s basketball game. Wilmington claimed the last meeting, a men’s basketball game during the 2005-06 season.

“We have talked about enhancing the student-athlete experience and a rivalry series such as the Quaker Bowl can ignite a tremendous amount of school spirit that will hopefully carry over to the entire campus community,” said Wilmington College Vice President of Athletic Administration Terry Rupert. “

With this re-creation, the Quaker Bowl will span the entire athletic year and over all contested sports. A victory in a sport will earn the winning institution a point and the school with the most points at the end of the year will have possession of the traveling trophy.

In sports that the schools play multiple times, the school that wins the series claims the point. If there is a tie, the schools split the point. Each sport can yield the winning institution no more than one point regardless of how many competitions occur within that athletic year.

The original concept for the Quaker Bowl began in 1963 for just winners of men’s basketball and football. Earlham claimed the first football game, 28-13. EC won or tied the first nine meetings, but Wilmington holds the football advantage, 10-8-2. The last time the two schools met on the gridiron, WC recorded the 43-7 victory in 1997.

On the hardwood, the two teams have met 46 times with Earlham holding the 25-21 lead. Wilmington won the last meeting 78-71 in the 2005-06 season.

For the 2017-18 season, the two schools will play each other in volleyball, men’s and women’s indoor and outdoor track & field, men’s and women’s cross country, football, men’s and women’s soccer, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s lacrosse and baseball.
