NEW CONCORD — The Wilmington College women’s cross country team opened the 2017 season at the Muskingum Invitational Friday and finished as the runnerup.

Sophomore Allison Helmke led the way for the Fightin’ Quakers, snagging a fifth-place finish by crossing the finish line of the 4K race in 17:27.92.

Freshman McKenzie Hamm — a Blanchester High School graduate — was the next WC runner, placing seventh in 18:06.37.

Next to finish was freshman Summer Doty. Doty ran an 18:19.67 to earn ninth-place for the team.

“I’m very pleased with how our team competed in the first meet of the year,” WC coach Ron Combs said. “We have some work to do, but I like the potential this team is demonstrating.”

The Fightin’ Quakers take on Thomas More College at home 6 p.m. Thursday.
