NEW RICHMOND – TJ Gelter may not have been crowned Homecoming King but once the varsity football game started Friday night against Wilmington, the New Richmond senior running back wore the crown.

A 5-7, 165-pound ball of fire, Gelter scored four touchdowns to lead the Lions to a 41-21 win over the Hurricane in SBAAC American Division action.

WHS quarterback Brady Evans exited the game twice in the first half. Following the first time he left the game, he returned to score on a two-yard touchdown run on a third-down play. Brady Henry’s extra point made it 7-0 WHS.

When Evans left the second time, at the 7:00 mark of the first, he did not return. Dylan Beaugard and Mason McIntosh took snaps at QB for the Hurricane.

To make matters worse, Beaugard went down with an apparent leg injury midway through the second quarter and did not return. Doug Eastes also left the game in the third quarter with an injury. The extent of the injuries to Eastes, Evans and Beaugard were not known at this time.

Beaugard made his mark prior to leaving the game. His 45-yard touchdown run with 4.5 seconds to play in the opening period tied the game and Henry’s extra point gave WHS a lead 14-13.

But it was all Lions from there. TJ Gelter scored in the second and then Josh Anderson passed 25 yards to Jesse Durbin in the third as New Richmond went up 27-14.

Wilmington began a comeback bid with McIntosh calling the signals. His pass to Carter Huffman put WHS in scoring position as the fourth quarter got underway. With 10:04 to go in the fourth, McIntosh connected with DJ Ames on a 20-yard scoring play. Henry’s PAT made it 27-21 Lions.

Gelter, though, took the wind out of the Hurricane when he followed that touchdown with a 91-yard kickoff return to make it 34-21. An Anderson to Corey Bozic 35 yard pass play upped the difference to 20 with 6:09 to go, 41-21.
