SPRINGFIELD – A year after missing out in a playoff, Wilmington senior Hunter DeWeese qualified for the Div. I district golf tournament next week during play Tuesday at the Div. I sectional tournament at Reid Park North Golf Course.

As a team, the Hurricane finished sixth with a 375 team total. Tippecanoe with a 368 was the fourth and final team qualifying for the district tournament.

“Obviously, disappointing for the team today,” WHS head coach Phil Gilmore said. “The course was easily the toughest we have ever played it. Very uncharacteristically had some bad holes from our top guys.”

Zach Zeckser had a 94 for Wilmington. The senior had 45-49.

Jack Murphy, a district qualifier last season as a freshman, had a 95 (47-48) on Tuesday. Dylan Combs carded a 99 (45-54) while Cameron Smart had a 106 (57-49).

DeWeese shot an 87 (42-45) and edged out a couple of golfers who had 88s for the final spot. DeWeese was fourth among individuals not on qualifying teams.

“I’m very happy for Hunter who missed by a playoff a year ago,” Gilmore said.

DeWeese will tee off 10:40 a.m. Oct. 12 at the district tournament with a state berth on the line.

“We had a good year, but sad to see it end the way it did for three of our seniors,” said Gilmore. “Zach Zeckser was a tremendous sport today, as he not only stepped up for us but as sores were posted he noticed his score was posted two strokes lower which at the time would have had us in a qualifying spot.

“But respectfully (Zeckser) told the scorer it was added wrong, which put the other team ahead. Great sportsmanship from a great young man.”

Alex Flick of Beavercreek was the sectional medalist with a 74 (37-37).
