OWENSVILLE – Cole Joslin ran for 168 yards and two scores as Clermont Northeastern ran away from East Clinton 35-13 Friday night.
The loss puts East Clinton at 3-6 overall and 2-2 in the SBAAC National Division.
The Rockets are now 5-4 overall and 2-2 in the division. CNE athletic director David Johnson said with a win over Williamsburg next week, the Rockets would have their first winning season since the 1990s.
Joslin led a Clermont Northeastern rushing attack that ran over the Astros for 354 yards on 54 rushes.
“We have trouble with teams that run right at us,” East Clinton head coach Jeremy Yankey said after the game.
The Rockets did not attempt a pass in the game.
East Clinton, on the other hand, ran for 165 yards with quarterback Brendan Jenkins going for 107 before exiting the game with an injury. Todd Wedding had several nifty runs and finished with 59 yards.
The Astros had 152 yards in the first half but finished with just 218 for the game.
“We just missed too many opportunities in the first half,” Yankey said.
The special teams for East Clinton played extremely well in the first half.
Kicker Austin Arellano booted a pair of field goals (23 and 27 yards) and had an extra point.
In addition, Patrick Dotson had a blocked punt in the first quarter and then tackled the CNE punter for a seven-yard loss on another attempt.
On defense, Nick Mess was all over the field for East Clinton in the first half.
Joslin, the top CNE runner, had a big half with 91 yards on 20 carries.
Jenkins had a 69 yard run that set up Luke Hanners 1-yard touchdown plunge to give EC a 10-7 lead with 6:22 to go in the second quarter.
In the first half, Jenkins had 97 yards on eight carries and passed for 42 yards. Wyatt Floyd had 42 yards receiving on a trio of catches.
