Led by the 1-2 punch of Simon Heys and Allister Brausch, the Wilmington High School boys cross country team won the South Central Ohio League championship meet Thursday at the 3.1-mile course on the Wilmington College campus.

The league championship is believed to be the first in cross country in school history, coach Eileen Grosse said.

“After seeing the league times, we thought we could win,” Grosse said. “Tonight it was about places, not times.”

Grosse and WHS assistant Brad Heys “have been working on them to compete and gutting it out in races. Tonight, they did it.”

Grosse gave Heys credit for working with runners on both the boys and girls teams.

Simon Heys ran 17:50.9 and finished third while Brausch was right behind him in fourth with a 17:55.1 clocking.

Clinton-Massie was fifth while East Clinton was seventh.

Jacob Whitaker led the Falcons. He was eighth in 18:30.9.

East Clinton’s first runner was Josh Jones, who was 18th in 19:37.8.

Ty Snarr was the third Hurricane to cross the line, placing 12th in 18:57.2. Bayden Stephens was 14th in 19:05.5 and Carter Nichols was 16th in 19:30.8.
