WILMINGTON – The University of Chicago used a big third quarter to claim the 2017 Fred Raizk Memorial Tournament championship with a 71-55 victory over the Wilmington College women’s basketball team on Thursday afternoon.

Wilmington held Chicago scoreless through the first five minutes of the game. Two baskets from Emily Harman had the Fightin’ Quakers ahead 4-0 until a three-pointer from tournament MVP Mia Farrell broke the deadlock for the Maroons. Maddie Snider answered with a triple of her own on the next possession, but Chicago’s defense held Wilmington to four points in the final four minutes of the quarter.

Leading 13-10 as the second quarter began, Chicago would grow its lead to as many as nine (32-23) before consecutive layups from Mackenzie Campbell got the Quakers within seven. An Olariche Obi layup that followed put the Maroons ahead 34-27 at halftime.

“I thought we gave our best defensive effort of the year through the first half,” WC head coach Jerry Scheve said after the game. “Somehow things fell apart in the third quarter and Chicago had a lot to do with that.”

Chicago, who is receiving votes in the most recent d3hoops.com Top 25 poll, outscored Wilmington 28-17 in the third quarter and would not relinquish the lead.

The Maroons finished 30-of-69 (43.5 percent) from the field compared to 18-of-57 (31.6) for the Quakers. Chicago also hit 10 three-pointers to offset making just 1-of-9 free throw attempts. Wilmington, which made 17-of-20 from the charity stripe, outrebounded Chicago 39-30, but could not overcome a 23-13 turnover deficit.

Campbell, who was named to the all-tournament team, was the lone Quaker to finish in double figures with 12 points. McKayla Binkley, the other Wilmington player on the all-tournament team, had 10 rebounds and five assists to go with four points. Harman, who held Obi to just six points, finished with eight rebounds and three assists.

“Those three [Campbell, Binkley and Harman] all played well, but I was also happy with some other people,” Scheve said. “I thought Faith [Teaford] and Maddie [Snider] both played well. Michelle Lee also gave us a lift off the bench.

Farrell led all scorers with 16 points for Chicago. Taylor Lake added nine points and eight rebounds.

Wilmington (6-4) will return to action on Dec. 30 for a road game at Mount St. Joseph University. Tip-off is scheduled for 1 p.m.
