BLANCHESTER – Delanie Eakins made a last-second shot Thursday that beat the buzzer and the Blanchester High School varsity girls basketball team, 51-50.

The non-league loss leaves the Ladycats with a 4-6 record.

“We let one slip through our fingers,” BHS coach Bradon Pyle said. “We haven’t played very much this season with a small lead late in games and I take the blame for not having the girls more prepared for that situation. It’s a tough way to lose but I’m incredibly proud of the way the girls played and how they made the proper adjustments in-game that we have been working on in practice.”

Blanchester trailed 28-18 at halftime.

“To battle back from a 10-point halftime deficit speaks to the character of this team,” said Pyle. “Hillsboro is a good team and we put ourselves in a position to win. Unfortunately, it just didn’t work out that way.

“Our girls played our best all-around game of the season. Outside of a few communication issues, our girls played fundamentally on the defensive end and did a good job on the offensive end attacking the basket and finding the open man.”

Eakins led all scorers with 18 points.

The Ladycats rallied in the third period, outscoring the Lady Indians 16-4 to take the lead 34-32. Blanchester led 50-49 with seven seconds to play before Eakins hit the game-winning shot, Pyle said.

Elecia Patton had 17 points, despite sitting out much of the second quarter, said Pyle. Olivia Gundler and Regan Ostermeier scored eight points each. Gundler also had eight blocked shots, three steals and three assists.
