WEST CHESTER — A pair of Clinton-Massie cross country runners advanced to the Div. II Troy Regional meet this week.

Running in the Div. II West Chester District Saturday at Voice of America Park, CM sophomore Katie Hughes and sophomore Jacob Whitaker both extended their respective seasons.

Hughes seventh overall in the Div. II girls race, clocking a season-best time of 20:25.6. There were 73 runners in the girls race.

“Katie ran a very smart race,” CM coach Dean Richardson said. “She knew who she had to run with in order to qualify and also to run a fast time. Katie’s race plan was to go out with this group and stay with them. Katie ran with this group the whole race. She was very determined and was not going to be denied. There was a difference of only 14 seconds between third place and the final qualifying spot.”

Whitaker ran 17:41.9 and finished 10th in the boys race.

“Jacob ran a very gutsy race,” Richardson said. “Jacob’s race plan was to get out quick and make sure he was in the top 12, then hang on as long as he could. It turned out that Jacob got stronger as the race went on and moved up one spot. His best time before this race was 18:30.”

For the CM girls, AJ Houseman was 30th in a personal best 22:20.1.

For the CM boys, the team finished ninth out of 12 teams. There were 87 runners in the boys race.

Alex Hudson was 45th in 19:10, Noah Brausch was 62nd in 20:27, Logan Fisher was 65th in a personal best 20:50, Brennen Swope was 71st in 21:46, Talent Sagraves was 77th in 22:58 and Jakob Meranda was 79th in 23:33.

At the regional meet Saturday at Hobart Arena, Hughes will run at 11:45 a.m. and Whitaker will run at 2:15 p.m.
