Massie softball sweeps to end spring trip

PIGEON FORGE, Tenn. – Clinton-Massie completed its spring break trip with a pair of wins, 12-1 over St. Joseph (N.Y.) By The Sea and 8-4 over Bath County (Ky.) 8-4.

The Lady Falcons are 8-1 on the year.

“This was a great week for us,” CM coach Anthony Lauer said. “We played some really great competition. This week we were able to get games in that we wouldn’t have played in Ohio. These girls played a lot of softball in four days, playing eight games. Their effort was outstanding.”

In the first game, Massie road the right arm of Claire Carruthers who pitched a three-hitter and struck out 11 in five innings in her season debut on the mound.

Hailey Clayborn homered for the first time this season. Natalie Lay also homered for the Lady Falcons.

In the second game, Clayborn homered again in the first inning. Massie scored five runs late to erase a 4-3 deficit. Carruthers and Lindsey Amberger both had three hits.

Bath Co. loaded the bases on two occasions, Lauer said, adding his squad surrendered just one run in those innings.

“These two innings obviously were game-changers,” Lauer said. “My girls held their composure which showed a lot about this team.”
