Ladycats defense stymies Astros in 50-23 romp

BLANCHESTER — Blanchester’s relentless defense wreaked havoc on East Clinton Monday night in a 50-23 BHS victory in a non-league girls basketball game at the BHS gym.

The Ladycats, now 2-0, forced 31 Lady Astros turnovers. Sarah Burton, Tristan Culberson and Rachael Doyle had 4 steals each for Blanchester.

East Clinton, 1-1 on the year, played without primary ball handler MacKenzie Campbell, who sat on the bench with crutches during the game.

“I do believe that drastically changed the complexion of the game,” said BHS coach Bennie Carroll. “It was a bad break for them.”

Burton finished as the top point-getter for the Ladycats, registering 13 on 4 of 8 shooting. She also had 9 rebounds. Culberson added 12 points.

“We’re working pretty hard,” Carroll said. “We’ve got a few girls who can shoot and if we play as hard as we did tonight we’ll make it tough for most teams.”

For East Clinton, Bre Davis, saddled with foul trouble much of the night, had 7 points while Allison Tong and Lacey Peterman, both coming off the bench, had 5 points each.

Blanchester scored the first 12 points of the game. Sam Gaddis hit a free throw with 1:45 to play in the opening period for EC’s first points.

The Lady Astros cut into the difference early in the second, 17-7, but Blanchester’s defense continued to harass EC. The Lady Astros had 9 turnovers in the first period and 10 more in the second and could never get untracked offensively.

It was a 25-14 Blanchester lead in the third when Culberson set-up a Kayla Dugger 3-pointer at the 5:35 mark. After a Doyle steal, Burton converted an old-fashioned 3-point play at 5:20 to make it 31-14. Doyle then cashed in a couple of free throws before coming up with a steal and layup as part of a quarter-ending 16-2 BHS run.

“You do hope for that flurry,” Carroll said. “You hope you keep grinding on them (defensively) and you get that run. You don’t always get it but if you play that way you’ll maybe get it once or twice in a game.”

Blanchester then started the fourth quarter with a 9-1 outburst with Burton and Culberson both nailing 3-pointers beyond the arc.
