Quakers reel in Muskies in 7-1 soccer win

NEW CONCORD – The Wilmington College men’s soccer team erupted for seven goals in a 7-1 victory at Muskingum University in Ohio Athletic Conference action Wednesday evening.

Wednesday night’s win brings the Quakers to 6-4-0 on the season and 1-1-0 in OAC competition.

Wilmington will continue OAC play Saturday against the University of Mount Union. Kickoff is scheduled for 3 p.m. at Townsend Field.

Felix Maurer earned the victory allowing one goal while Ethan Butcher closed out the final 16:01 in net.

The Fightin’ Quakers started hot with a fourth-minute goal from Ludwig Lance assisted by Niklas Martensson. Thompson Birch then scored off a corner kick by Daniel Kappelin to bring the Quakers lead to 2-0 in the 12th minute.

Ian Molfenter followed with a goal in the 15th minute assisted by David Bogaczewicz. Muskingum’s lone goal came off its only shot on goal by Chase Michael Hillard assisted by Don Ingold in the 18th minute.

Wilmington rounded out the first half scoring with goals by Martensson (38th minute) and Treshaun Pate (39th minute) to give the Quakers a 5-1 lead at the half.

The Quakers started off the second half strong as well thanks to a goal by Leon Tank, assisted by Martensson, in the 52nd minute. The final goal of the night came from Bruce Anthony in the 89th minute.

Wilmington outshot the Muskies 17-5 on their way to the OAC win. Muskingum would have two second half red cards forcing them to finish the game with only nine players on the pitch.
