Week 7 Final: Blanchester 49 Williamsburg 7

0

BLANCHESTER — After shaking hands with their opponents, Blanchester head coach Brandon Sammons and wide receiver Brent Hopkins began a 60-yard race to the victory bell behind the west endzone.

“I came out of the handshake line and he looked like he had that ‘dart for the bell’ look in him,” Sammons said. “I was like, ‘dang it, I’m going to be the first one!’”

Sammons edged Hopkins by less than a step. It was the only result in doubt on this night.

Blanchester’s first-string offense scored on all but one of its drives as the Wildcats celebrated homecoming with a 49-7 victory over Williamsburg Friday night at Barbour Memorial Field.

Gaining almost 10 yards per play, Blanchester’s offense was dominant.

Brayden Sipple completed 10 of 18 passes for 277 yards and two passing touchdowns. He also added a five-yard touchdown run.

It was all smiles from Sammons and the Wildcats, from the opening onside kick recovery to the victory-bell sprint.

“That’s fun. That’s what it’s all about,” Sammons said. “We’re finally getting to the point where we can just play. That was a good time.”

After recovering the opening onside kick, Blanchester went 43 yards in six plays. Destin Ashcraft scored to give Blan a 7-0 lead.

Williamsburg failed to pick up a first down on its first possession. Blanchester started from its 32 and needed just one 68-yard pass from Sipple to Hopkins to make it 14-0 Blan.

Blanchester’s next five scoring drives lasted a combined 27 plays.

“This is what we know we’re capable of,” Sammons said. “The frustrating part is that we didn’t do some of it the first five games. These guys are starting to figure out the whole team concept and selflessness. When we do that, this is the result.”

Hopkins finished with 124 yards receiving and 49 yards rushing. Clayton Schirmer added 106 yards receiving on four catches.

Blanchester (2-5, 2-0 in SBC) had 22 first downs on just 45 plays.

The only negative on the night for Blanchester was the penalties, committing 11 for 128 yards.
