Burns season ends at district

The tennis season for Wilmington High School freshman Claire Burns ended Thursday in the opening round of the Division I district tournament at the Lindner Family Tennis Center in Mason.

Burns was defeated by Caitlyn Fisher of Turpin 0-6, 0-6. Fisher, a senior, is a three-time state tennis tournament qualifier. WHS head coach Doug Cooper said Fisher was knocked out of the state tournament last season by the eventual state champion in a match that lasted three sets.

“Claire has committed herself to a tremendous amount of work on her tennis game in recent years,” Cooper said. “That hard work has put her in a position to earn some valuable freshman experience in the sectional semifinals and at districts. There is no substitute for hard work and there is no substitute for the kind of experience you get from playing and learning from state qualifiers.”

Burns ends her season with a 25-3 record. The losses are to a district qualifier and two state qualifiers.

“We’re extremely proud of her tenacity on the court,” said Cooper. “She’s a competitor. It was nice to see so many people come down today to support her.”
