WILMINGTON – The Alumni Field scoreboard exploded Friday night. Unfortunately for Wilmington football fans, it was not the kind of outcome expected for Senior Night.

Batavia came alive in the second quarter with a 28-point effort, followed by a 28-point fourth quarter, and defeated the Hurricane 64-49 in an SBAAC American Division shootout.

Batavia is now 6-2, and Wilmington falls to 3-5 on the season.

Batavia rolled up 593 yards in total offense on 55 plays, while Wilmington generated 393 yards on 64 plays.

Individually, the Bulldogs were led by Jason Griffin, who rushed for 280 yards and five touchdowns. He also had 85 yards receiving and one touchdown reception.

The first quarter was full of highlights by the Hurricane, including a pair of long drives which resulted in rushing touchdowns by senior Grant Mayer. On the night, Mayer rushed for 125 yards on 20 carries.

Mayer also electrified the Hurricane crowd with an 85-yard kickoff return, which helped the ‘Cane build a 21-7 lead with just under 5:00 remaining until halftime. Wilmington still led 28-14 when Cam Coomer returned a Bulldogs’ kickoff for a score, eluding Batavia defenders down the sideline.

At the intermission, Wilmington took a 35-28 lead into the locker room.

The third quarter was uneventful for the Hurricane, while Batavia capitalized and took the lead with 7:03 remaining on Griffin’s rushing touchdown and a successful two-point conversion by kicker Corbin Richardson. After three quarters, the Bulldogs were up 36-35.

Wilmington could not find a way to keep Batavia off the scoreboard in the final period as the Bulldogs reeled off a 28-14 margin to put the game away.

In a losing effort, Brady Evans completed 19 of 33 pass attempts for 252 yards and three TDs, but also had two interceptions. In the fourth quarter, he hooked up with Ryan Camp for 57 yards on a tipped pass, and the final score of the night in the final minute on an 11-yard pass to Chris Custis.
