BHS grad Penquite leads Marietta to 2-1 win over WC

WILMINGTON – Blanchester High School graduate Dakota Penquite picked up the win in goal as Marietta defeated Wilmington College 2-1 in a very physical Ohio Athletic Conference men’s soccer match Saturday at Williams Stadium.

The Pioneers outshot the Quakers 16-9 on their way to an OAC win. Penquite takes credit for the win in goal for the Pioneers with three saves.

Felix Maurer played in goal for the Quakers and had five saves. Eight yellow cards were awarded in the very physical match with two for the Pioneers and six for the Quakers.

The win is the first for the Pioneers in OAC competition. The Quakers fall to 7-6-0 overall and 2-3-0 in the OAC.

The Pioneers started strong with a goal in the 11th minute by Luke Maher.

WC’s Niklas Martensson had a shot hit the crossbar in the 22nd minute before scoring off a penalty kick for the Quakers in the 43rd minute. Martensson currently is second in goals scored in the OAC with 14.

The second half saw the Pioneers score the winning goal from a 59th minute penalty kick goal by Cole Pappas. The Quakers had shots hit the crossbar in the 81st and 86th minutes.

The Quakers will continue OAC play Wednesday at home against the Cardinals of Otterbein University. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
