WILMINGTON — With an overpowering inside game, McClain started fast and defeated Wilmington 58-47 in a South Central Ohio League girls basketball game at Fred Summers Court.
The Lady Tigers two post players — Beth Montgomery and Makenzie Montavon — combined for 29 points on 11 of 14 shooting and 13 rebounds.
“Our post players, 00 Beth Montgomery and 42 Makenzie Montavon, were big for us,” said McClain head coach Jarrod Haines. “We executed our game plan and had a lot of different girls step up.”
Haines noted the all-around play of point guard Taylor Polley, who had 12 points, 4 assists and 5 steals.
The win puts McClain at 2-1 overall and 1-1 in the SCOL.
Wilmington falls to 1-3 overall and 0-2 in the league.
Mya Jackson had 17 points for WHS.
“We weren’t ready,” Lady Hurricane head coach Mark Short said after the game.
If the score is any indication of readiness, Short’s statement was true. McClain scored the first 12 points of the game and led 21-7 at the end of the first quarter. The two MHS inside players, with Montgomery scoring 9, combined for 14 in the opening frame to establish dominance inside.
McClain led by as many as 18, but Wilmington pulled within 8 when Sarah Quallen’s basket made it 48-40.
Quallen and Katlyn Jamiel came off the bench to provide a spark for WHS.
“Sarah really came in and battled and we need that from more of our kids, to come in and battle,” Short said.
