Turnovers doom Ladycats in 62-49 loss

BLANCHESTER — Trailing by as many as 11, the Georgetown girls basketball team rallied in the second half Thursday night to defeat Blanchester 62-49.

Aided by 34 Blanchester turnovers, the Lady G-Men (1-0 overall, 1-0 SBC National) used a 24-6 run in the third quarter to surge ahead to stay.

“You can’t have 30-plus turnovers in a game against anybody,” BHS head coach Bradon Pyle said. “You lose 30 shot opportunities and you give them 30 extra shot opportunities. It just can’t happen.”

Blanchester (1-1, 0-1) trailed by eight, 49-41, with 2:15 remaining. Elecia Patton tried to lead the comeback charge by burying threes on back-to-back BHS possessions.

The second Patton three pulled the Lady Wildcats within four, 53-45, with 75 seconds remaining.

However, Georgetown put the game away by scoring the last nine points, including four of five from the free throw line.

Blanchester opened the second quarter on a 22-5 run to take a 30-19 lead with 1:21 left in the half. During the stretch, the Lady Wildcats had just four turnovers and stymied the Georgetown offense.

“Our defense has been OK so far,” Pyle said. “I like what I see from the girls in terms of effort and hustle.”

Patton led all scorers with 22 points, including nine in the second quarter and seven in the fourth. Olivia Gundler and Lana Roy each added nine for Blanchester.

Three Georgetown players scored in double figures, led by Kim Seigla’s 17. Maddi Benjamin added 15 while freshman Torie Utter added 11.
