LEES CREEK – East Clinton stayed stride for stride with Wilmington for 8 minutes, but it was the next 16 when things got ugly.
The Hurricane outscored the Astros 45-7 in the middle 2 periods, holding EC without a field goal for an 8-minute stretch, to roll to a 66-31 South Central Ohio League victory Friday in a jam-packed EC gym.
University of Cincinnati-signee Jarron Cumberland, who left the game for good early in the fourth quarter, led all scorers with 20 points. He also had 7 rebounds, 5 assists, 3 steals and a blocked shot.
Teammates Chris Wolary and Dylan Beaugard joined Cumberland in double figures with 13 and 12 points, respectively. Wolary also had 7 rebounds.
Wyatt Floyd led the Astros (2-4, 0-3) with 13 points.
The Hurricane (5-0, 4-0) led the entire night, but had the Astros nipping at its heels in the first quarter. Wilmington darted to an early 7-2 lead. Cole Jenkins’ three made it 7-5 and his backdoor pass to Johnny Blair, who converted the easy layup, made it 11-9. Floyd’s 3 just before the end of the opening period made it 13-12.
Then the flood gates opened.
Wolary and Cumberland combined for 10 straight points to put Wilmington up 27-14. Nick Morris, Beaugard, Matt Creditt and Wolary teamed to score the last 10 points of half to set the Hurricane advantage at 39-15 at the break.
Eight straight Wilmington points put the Hurricane up 49-19 midway through the third quarter.
The Hurricane cushion reached 40 early in the final period. Its largest lead, 43 points, came moments later.
East Clinton is coached by long-time Hurricane assistant coach Tony Berlin, who also is a WHS graduate.
