Senior Ashley Stockton scored a penalty kick with 32 seconds remaining to lift the Wilmington College women’s soccer team to a 3-2 win over Ohio Wesleyan Wednesday in non-conference action at Townsend Field.

It was the third career goal, all this season, for Stockton (Waynesville, OH/Waynesville), and they all have come off penalty kicks.

“I think tonight our depth definitely helped us,” said Wilmington head coach Steve Spirk. “We subbed late in the game, brought on some fresh people that put some pressure on them. Ohio Wesleyan is a quality team; they have played a very tough schedule. Their record may not show it, but beating them here, is a very good win over us.”

The penalty kick helped erase the pain of losing a 2-0 lead.

Wilmington grabbed the lead in the 38th minute as senior Erika Good (Miamisburg, OH/Miamisburg) tallied her first goal of the season, and WC took the advantage into half.

It didn’t take long for the Fightin’ Quakers to build on its lead as they stole the kickoff in the second half, played it wide to junior Taylor Scott (Lynchburg, OH/Lynchburg-Clay), who found the back of the net just 19 seconds into the half. Freshman Stephanie Max (Brookville, OH/Clayton Northmont) was credited with the assist.

“I was pleased on some of the things we did,” said Spirk. “We created enough to score two goals, but when you are up 2-0, you have to have a little better clock management. We let them back in the game. Fortunately, we pulled it out in the end.”

Wilmington dominated in the first half, holding the Battling Bishops to just one shot in the first 45 minutes, while launching 12 of its own. The shots were closer in the second half as WC held the 7-6 advantage over Ohio Wesleyan.

Riding a three-game winning streak, Wilmington hosts Manchester 4 p.m. Saturday.
