WC women blanked again 2-0

The Wilmington College women’s soccer team was held scoreless for the second straight game and fell to Otterbein Wednesday, 2-0, at Townsend Field in Ohio Athletic Conference action.

“We made two mistakes and it cost us two goals,” said Wilmington head coach Steve Spirk. “When you are playing in the OAC, and you are at home, you have to come out a lot harder than we did tonight. We waited until we got down, and then we started to play hard, and play our game. When you are down 2-0, sometimes it’s too late.”

Otterbein took the lead in the 35th minute as a free kick from midfield got past a couple defenders, allowing an OC player to get the ball in the back of the net. The score stayed that way to intermission.

Less than four minutes into the second half, the Cardinals doubled their advantage as a ball played from the end line crossed the mouth of the goal and was tapped in.

Despite a scoreless drought of more than 210 minutes, Spirk isn’t worried about his team’s scoring.

“If weren’t getting chances, I would be worried,” said Spirk. “But, we are just not putting away our chances. We had some chances in the last couple of games, we are just not putting them away. We will continue to work on it, and continue to look for people to score. Hopefully, we will find our rhythm in the last three games.”

Freshmen Stephanie Max (Brookville, OH/Clayton Northmont) and Taylor Leake (Beavercreek, OH/Beavercreek) combined for four of Wilmington’s nine shots as the Fightin’ Quakers outshot their counterparts, 9-8.

Freshman Brittany Ross (Covington, OH/Newton) finished with two saves on four shots.

Wilmington (8-6-1 overall, 2-3-1 OAC) returns home for its final home game of the season, hosting Mount Union 7 p.m. Saturday.
