WC women earn berth in OAC tournament

Following a heartbreaking overtime loss to Mount Union last week, senior Erika Good made a spirited plea to her teammates. The message was simple, “I don’t want me career to end in a week and we wanted to play in the postseason.”

The message was received loud and clear and following Saturday’s 1-0 win over Heidelberg, the Wilmington College women’s soccer team advances to the Ohio Athletic Conference tournament after a two-year hiatus.

The WC women (10-7-1, 4-4-1 OAC) are the No. 5 seed and were scheduled to travel to Baldwin-Wallace 7 p.m. Monday in the first round of the tournament.

“I told the team it’s been a couple seasons since we made the conference tournament, but we been talking about getting to the OAC tournament since the preseason,” said Wilmington head coach Steve Spirk. “The players made it happened.

“As I told team on that Monday, we have played stronger this season on the road then we have at home in some cases,” Spirk continued. “We didn’t get it done at home last week, but now we have the opportunity to get it done on the road, and that is what they did.”

Junior Taylor Scott (Lynchburg, OH/Lynchburg-Clay) scored the game-winner in the 65th minute with the assist being credited to freshman Sarah Pierce (New Carlisle, OH/Dominion Academy). Scott, who scored her sixth goal of the season, led the team with five shots – four on goal.

Wilmington unleashed 19 shots, including 11 on goal, while Heidelberg only had six shots. Five of the Student Princes, along with both shots on goal, came in the second half.

“We definitely had some very good chances to score and just didn’t put them away,” said Spirk. “At halftime, we told them to play the game and don’t worry about what happened in the first half; and when we get an opportunity to take advantage.”

Freshman Brittany Ross (Covington, OH/Newton) made both of her saves in the final six minutes of the game.
