DELAWARE – The Wilmington College men’s swim team finished first or second in 13 of 20 events Sunday as the Fightin’ Quakers claimed the two-day, five-team Ohio Wesleyan Invitational.

“I think it was a great meet for us,” said Wilmington head coach Trip Breen. “It’s a real positive environment and the guys stepped up and raced well today and yesterday.”

Junior David Spraul (Cincinnati, OH/Princeton) had an individual victory, a relay victory with four second-place finishes. He won the 200 backstroke (1:59.43), and teamed with junior Erik Spraul (Cincinnati, OH/Princeton), senior David Hawk (Edison, OH/Mount Gilead) and sophomore Cody Nash (Fresno, CA/Kingsbury) to win the 400 medley relay.

David Spraul placed second in the 100 backstroke (54.57) and added three second-place finishes on relays. He was joined by Erik Spraul, Hawk and freshman Andrew Stewart (Wilmington, OH/Clinton-Massie) in the 400 freestyle relay (3:17.86). Nash, Stewart, and sophomore Alex Tillapaugh (Wilmington, OH/Wickenberg (AZ)) joined David Spraul in the 200 medley relay, while the 800 freestyle relay of Hawk, David Spraul, Nick DeWalt (Ft. Wayne, IN/Bishop Dwenger) and Brendon Tirado (Dayton, OH/Oakwood) rounded out the David Spraul scoring spree.

Tirado in the 200 freestyle (1:48.92) and Hawk in the 50 freestyle (21.74) added to Wilmington’s win total over the weekend. Hawk recorded a second-place finish in the 100 freestyle.

Erik Spraul tallied a pair of second-place finishes in the 200 individual medley (2:01.50) and the 400 individual medley (4:22.25), and Nash was second in the 200 breaststroke (2:19.11).

“I thought Cody Nash had a great meet. He really put together a great 100 breaststroke and a great 200 breaststroke, and came back to swim a nice mile today. He swam the mile at the end of the meet so it was his seventh event. To watch him step up and put together a great mile was nice to watch.”

Hawk, Stewart, Erik Spraul and sophomore Carter Semenchuk (Rockford, IL/Hononegah) placed second in the 200 freestyle relay (1:29.82).

The two-day event marked last competitive event for Wilmington until an OAC dual meet against Manchester on Jan. 16.

“There are absolutely things that we have to work on,” said Breen. “This meet has great timing because we really have a month and a half until we compete again. We have a stretch of time where we can work on things without getting up and getting ready for meets. We can focus on our training, and obviously, finishing the semester academically.”
