HIGHLAND CO. — A fatal Sunday motorcycle crash that involved a deer and took the life a Hillsboro woman is being investigated by the Wilmington Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol.

According to the state patrol, the crash took place at approximately 4:05 p.m. on New Market Road, northeast of East Danville Road, in New Market Township, Highland County.

The crash occurred when a green 2002 Harley Davidson Sportster, driving northeast and operated by Heidi K. Stevens, 48, of Hillsboro, struck a deer that entered the roadway. Stevens was ejected and the motorcycle continued off the right side off the roadway where it overturned, according to the state patrol.

Stevens was transported from the scene by a Med Flight helicopter to Kettering Medical Center in Dayton where she was pronounced deceased.

The state patrol said the preliminary crash investigation indicates that Stevens was not wearing a helmet when the crash occurred.

The crash remains under investigation by the state patrol.

Assisting at the scene were the Paint Joint EMS/Fire District and the Highland County Sheriff’s Office.

“The patrol would like to remind all motorists that seat belts save lives. It’s simple – safety belts save lives and reduce injury in crashes. It is the easiest thing you can do to protect yourself, your family and your friends,” the state patrol said in a news release.
